The 17th National War Heroes’ Commemoration Ceremony was held with dignified splendor at the War Heroes Monument in Battaramulla, under the patronage of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Amidst a solemn gathering of tri-forces commanders, senior military officials, and grieving families, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) proudly joined the nation in honoring the brave individuals who laid down their lives to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
In his moving address, President Dissanayake emphasized that the true security and future of the nation do not depend on the repetition of conflict, but on building a united, progressive, and equal society. Highlighting the government’s path toward lasting peace, the President stated:
"We must choose the path that leads this country towards unity, development, and prosperity while safeguarding the lives of the people... The government's focus is to prevent the recurrence of conflict and to build a democratic society where equality before the law is guaranteed."
The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the three-decade-long war, during which countless unknown cadets made the ultimate sacrifice for the motherland. Their youthful bravery and silent dedication remain etched into the foundations of the nation's peace.
To honor their memory and the legacy of all fallen heroes, Major General APCR Premathilake RSP USP ndc, the Director of National Cadet Corps, laid floral wreaths at the base of the monument.
Representing the future generation of leadership and national unity, Corps Regimental Sergeant Major (Boys Cadet) E. Edwin Anorishan from Jaffna Hindu College and Corps Regimental Sergeant Major (Girls Cadet) HMJCS Herath from Bandarawela Central College also stepped forward. Their presence and floral tributes beautifully symbolized a united Sri Lanka, stretching from the North to the Central Highlands, standing together in gratitude, remembrance, and a shared commitment to a peaceful tomorrow.
